David Hodge, Leader of SCC Conservative Group

David was brought up in a Dublin orphanage, leaving at the age of 14 and moving to England at 18. He joined the Army where he saw active service in Borneo and Northern Ireland in a career of 22 years and where he was recognised for his service and conduct. David always remembers his upbringing and promotes 500 Apprenticeships every year as part of the Leader’s initiative to give every young person a chance to succeed.

Shortly after leaving the Army in 1985 David’s wife died of leukaemia leaving him to bring up 3 sons on his own. David married Anne in 2000 and they live in Caterham in Surrey. Anne is highly supportive of David and they make a really strong team both locally in Caterham and in Surrey.

David has lived in Tandridge District for over 30 years, and was elected to Tandridge District Council in 1992 where he led campaigns to improve local sports facilities. David served the community for 12 years as a District Councillor and for the last nine years has represented the Warlingham Division on Surrey County Council, which covers Chelsham, Farleigh, Tatsfield, Titsey, Warlingham & Woldingham. In 2011, his fellow Councillors elected David as Leader of the Council where he has been credited with firm leadership and dedication to ensure that Surrey is an innovative, efficient and leading County Council. David’s mantra is team working – One Team! He has applied this with great success in Surrey where the County Council was named Council of the Year in 2013. He was elected Chairman of the County Council Network in 2013. His robust leadership style has been welcomed by all as he champions the cause of the English counties.

David demands high standards from all Councillors. Following a highly successful election campaign in May 2013 he now leads the strongest Conservative County Council administration in the UK.

David has been very active in the local Conservative Party serving as Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer of various branches and in varying roles with the East Surrey Conservative Association. He is at his happiest on the doorstep engaging directly with the voter!

Outside politics David is a dedicated Rotarian, having served as local branch President and as Surrey and Sussex District Governor. He led a national Rotary campaign raising £3M to help eradicate polio in the world and has led teams to Sierra Leone building hospitals, schools and villages. David has substantial experience in business and is well known for his many charitable activities including his leading role in Rotary International.
